Associate Professor Can Alkan received a Horizon Europe project grant from the European Commission.

Associate Professor Can Alkan is leading an international consortium as the coordinator of the project “BioPIM – Processing-in-memory architectures and programming libraries for bioinformatics algorithms” of the Horizon Europe call “European Innovation Council Pathfinder Open”. Together with partners from Switzerland, France, and Israel, Dr. Alkan will focus on co-designing algorithms and data structures commonly used in bioinformatics together with emerging processing-in-memory hardware technologies to obtain the highest benefit in cost, energy, and time savings in genome sequence analysis. BioPIM project aims to impact all forms of genome and transcriptome studies including 1) disease-causing mutation discovery including cancer, 2) metagenomics, 3) population genetics and comparative genomics, 4) transcriptome profiling, and 5) outbreak detection and tracking including COVID-19, Ebola, and Zika.

Assoc. Prof. Can Alkan will serve as the Program Committee Chair of the 21st IEEE International Workshop on High Performance Computational Biology (HiCOMB).

Computer Engineering Department orientation meeting for new undergraduate students will be held on September 21, 2021, at 13:00 in Mithat Çoruh amphi in B Block of Engineering Building. New students will be informed about the department, the goals of the undergraduate program, curriculum, the role of advisors, exchange opportunities, undergraduate research opportunities, summer trainings,  and opportunities after graduation.  Tips and suggestions for success will be conveyed as well. The seminar will be held in a face-to-face manner with covid19 precautions in place.

Orientation seminar will be held in two sessions of same content to reduce the number of students in the amphi. Session 1 will be between 13:00 and 14:00. Students with lastname starting with A-K will join session 1. Session 2 will be between 14:00 and 15:00. Students with lastname starting with L-Z will join session 2. Attendance will be taken to count for GE101.

Another seminar will be organized for students that will be in the English Preparatory School in this Fall semester. The date of this seminar will be announced later and  the seminar will be in Turkish.
